In the heart of the old Lisboa

Behind the waterfront district of Santos, are the narrow streets of the tiny and picturesque Madragoa, which, together with Alfama, was home to Lisbon's fishwives and fishing community. Right in the middle of this quaint neighborhood is where we are - in the very old Travessa das Inglesinhas. Today Madragoa it's known for its traditional taverns, "petiscos" (tapas) restaurants, for its many tiled facades and all the charme of a traditional Lisbon “bairro”.

Santos, its more mundane neighbor, is known for its design shops, design and architecture schools, and for bars and clubs that attract college students and teenagers. The area is famous for its nightlife and bohemian atmosphere but it's also a neighborhood of grand mansions, just like the residential Lapa district up the hill. It was here that many aristocrats and noble families st up their homes in the 18th and 19th century.
